"Safety stop" legislation is up for consideration in the House Committee on Transportation – Vehicles & Safety, and Illinois legislators need to hear from you immediately!
The
legislation, SB2111, would legalize the “safety stop,” allowing people biking to treat stop signs as yield signs. This simple update has been proven to reduce crashes and keep cyclists out of harm’s way at intersections — the most dangerous places on our roads.
To make sure the bill clears the committee and moves forward, we need you to file a witness slip with the Illinois House before 10 am on Wed., April 23. Filing a witness slip means that you’re going on record in support of a bill.
Now is the time to act. Please use the instructions below to file a witness slip in support of SB2111 for safer, more accessible streets. Every action counts!

HOW TO SUBMIT A WITNESS SLIP
Filing a witness slip means that you’re going on record in support of a bill. Please follow the steps below. - Go to the Illinois General Assembly webpage for filing this witness slip.
- In section I, add your information. If you are representing an organization as an employee, include the name in the “firm/business” field. If you are not representing an organization as an employee, add “self.”
- In section II, if you are representing a group, organization, or business, also add the name here. Make sure you have permission to do this! Otherwise, type “self” or “na.”
- In section III, mark yourself as a “proponent.”
- In
section IV, select “record of appearance only.”
- Agree to the terms of agreement, and then select “create slip” in the lower right hand corner, and then ask 3 friends to do the same!
